HIMYM Episode Reviews: Season 1 Episode 6: Slutty Pumpkin

Summary
It's Halloween and Ted tells Robin about how every Halloween he goes up to the roof party where years earlier he met a girl in a "Slutty Pumpkin" outfit. He proceeds to do so again, with Barney reluctantly accompnaying him. Ted then waits to meet this perfect woman while Barney uses a variety of costume disguises to allow him to hit on the same girl multiple times, until he finally gets her number while dressed up as a penguin.

Meanwhile Robin and her current person of interest go on a double date with Marshall and Lily who are dressed up as Jack Sparrow and a parrot. Robin doesn't dress up while her POI Mike does dress up as Hansel. The double date goes badly as Robin doesn't seem eager to be part of a couple.

Marshall and Lily end up winning the bar's costume contest. A disheartened Robin meets up with Ted on the roof, and they discuss how Ted is waiting for love, and Robin isn't sure if she is ever meant to even want to be in love.

Theories
A lot of people think that the Slutty Pumpkin will end up being the Mother, but I doubt it. I don't think the Mother is someone Ted has met yet, even as briefly as the Slutty Pumpkin. The Slutty Pumpkin is like that "perfect woman" you build in your head, but the real life version is actually way better. The real Mother is going to be so much more awesome then the Slutty Pumpkin.

Review
Good episode. Barney is very funny with all of his outfits, and his intro as a Top Gun pilot was awesome. Ted and Robin both confide in each other and are clearly both more then just friends even though both have dated other people since their original romantic snaffu. Robin's disinterest in having a relationship is a very interesting feature of her character that kinda gets dropped after this season. I guess it's easy to be in your mid twenties with what could be a promising career and be uninterested in a relationship, then nearly thirty with a job going nowhere. Still it's interesting to note what Robin is like in these early episodes. Marshall and Lily are almost nauseating with how "couply" they are, but that's just the way they are. Neither Marshall or Lily are people who retain any independence in their relationship, they both enter wholeheartedly. It's nice to see although at times it gets stale, luckily for those of use who want to see their relationship get shook up, they've got some drama heading their way this season. Finally I think Ted waiting for the Slutty Pumpkin is kind of lame. Barney is right, Halloween is a time to go out and have fun, not sit around and wait for some mythical "Mrs. Right".

Ranking
7.5 out of 10.
